The Mets are still looking for a jack-of-all-trades kind of character. Guys that have filled this role in the past have been Damion Easley, Joe McEwing and other people of that sort. An interesting discussion has been going around as to who the Mets might be able to nab to fill that role since Easley has moved on, and one interesting name to consider might be Rich Aurilia.
The 37-year old Aurilia would fit nicely into the Mets plans for 2009. I know people will have reservations about his age, but he can still be a useful bench player. Last season, Aurilia hit .283 with 10 homers and 52 RBI for the Giants. One of the more intriguing things about Aurilia is that he hit .321 against left handed pitching, and he plays a lot of positions. He can play third base, first base, outfield, and he can fill in at shortstop and second if needed.
He can be the guy who gives Church a rest against left handed pitching, and he may be the logical right handed bench bat that this team has been looking for. The problem is that most people expected him to re-surface with San Francisco. If he gets the desire to join a potential winner, that’s where the Mets might be in luck.
Another guy who Matt Cerrone likes in particular is Nomar Garciaparra. I do not agree with the sentiment. All nomar would do is replace Moises Alou on the DL for half the season. That is not the kind of player the Mets should be looking to add.
