Three words. Micro fracture surgery. I just know it’s coming.
Guys, Beltran is not coming back. I just have a hunch that he’ll opt for the surgery. Which really is the only way to truly heal a bone bruise as severe as Beltran’s even though the micro fracture king himself, Dr. Steadman, recommended rest. The problem is that rest has not been the wrong answer thus far as the bone bruise has not gotten better.
Now your going to ask me where I’m getting this information from and the answer is nowhere but between my dirty ears. But I’ve been a Mets fan my whole life and know that when the $h*t hits the fan in Met Country it hits at 100 mph. I mean how else do you explain a pitcher that replaced an injured pitcher getting hurt trying to beat out a ground ball.
In doing some research of micro fracture surgery I became quite fascinated by it. It would seem that creating tiny fractures in a already sick bone would be the opposite of a good thing but that’s simply not the case. And the fact that your up and running 4 months later is a bonus.
Exactly what they do is they create tiny fractures in the underlying bone and this causes new cartilage to form. Called a super-clot this new cartilage is a natural reaction the body has. The new cartilage increases the stem cells and promotes a healthy blood flow throughout the bone. Most athletes return to form, some do not. It Depends on how the new cartilage forms. Its pretty much strictly science and chances.
Although, In dealing with an athletes body chances are the new cartilage is just as strong, durable and long-lasting as the surrounding cartilage. The list of athletes that have had this type of surgery is long.
Carlos Beltran will be one of those athletes. That’s the year we are experiencing people.

I’ve had that same fear Anthony. If the Mets are not going to make a go of it and trade for a Halladay or a bat, than the Mets should shut down Reyes and Beltran and do whatever is neccesary to have them at 100% for next spring. That goes for John Maine too. Nice post.

I agree with Joe D. When (maybe they have already) the Mets decide that this year is lost, shut both Reyes and Beltran down for the season.
No. No. No. No. No.
Please no. This isn’t an Amare Staudamire situation…it’s just a bone bruise. The season is going to turn around with Carlos Beltran.
Hope he makes it back, still one of my faves.
