What We Need is Change

President Obama should teach the Mets a thing or two about change.

On this Election Day, as things wind down, I find myself inspired to do what I do best. Why not write about the Mets? I thought about a year ago when President Barack Obama broke the barrier as the first African American President, and then I thought about his motto.
Change was the theme, and whether you think he has held up his end or not, I am going to take the same angle when it comes to the Mets. We certainly can use plenty of change in Queens, and I have decided to take each letter of the word and break down what the Mets can do with it, so without further adu, let’s get started.
The Letter “C” can stand for many things. Cooperation seems to be a solid word for the occasion. This team needs to get back to the basics and learn how to work together. I feel like I am talking about kindergardeners learning how to share, but whatever. The Mets obviously need to get back to the basics. Cooperation is essential for them.
The next letter is “H”, which I would love to have stand for Hunt. The Mets need to hunt for a power hitter to fill the void in left field. Both Jerry Manuel and Omar Minaya’s jobs are on the line this year, and they know that they need to overpay to make a splash. To make matters simple, they need to do it.
The letter “A” should stand for appreciate. The Mets need to think about their fans. It seems like that mockery of a stadium and product that they put out there would seem like a slap in the face. Show some more of this team’s historic past. We all appreciate Jackie Robinson and the Dodgers, but would a passing tourist even know that the Mets play in the stadium?
Next, we move on to the letter “N”. Neglect is the perfect fit here. the Mets need to be wary of their past mistakes. They need to address problems when they arise, and they need to stop thinking they are immune to problems. We all saw this season that clearly…they aren’t.
The letter “G” should stand for a phrase. How about “go for the gold?” There are two “g” words in there, so I will stick with it. I am tired of watching that team across the river spend and spend to get the job done. They make plenty of mistakes, but they know that there is guaranteed to be some reward if you make enough investments. The Mets need to take up a similar philosophy.
Last but not least, we have the letter “E”. We need to think about evaluation. Whether you are talking about the big club or even the lowest level minor league team, the Mets need to take more of an initiative with their players. I don’t know if there is a lack of coaching, but things need to change. We need to see the players develop better.
Change is what we need, and it is bound to happen sooner or later.
