Time to Bring Them Back

Could you see Cliff Floyd returning to the Mets? (PHOTO BY ICON SMI)

Don’t even get me started on last season. It was one of the most pain inflicting adventures I have ever experienced. Come mid-July, all hope was lost. Talks of next season were already starting to begin. Of course there was the typical trade deadline all-nighter, only to be zapped by Mr.Minaya once again. “I think we can solve the issues using the internal players we have in the organization.” Omar, you have already called everyone up. Unless you can turned rock into water, stop talking.
Hot Stove is heating up. Players options are being picked up, declined, etc. What’s next for the Mets? I know it’s easy to simply say “just spend huge dollars and get the best players out there,” but don’t forget- our GM is Omar Minaya. That won’t happen. I want to talk about two men who I believe have the ability to change the attitude and chemistry of this team into something we have not seen since 2006.
Bring back Cliff Floyd and Darren Oliver. Watching the 2009 ALCS killed me. Seeing Darren Oliver get huge outs for the Angels in the biggest of spots was heart-wrenching. All I could think about was him coming out of the bullpen for the Mets and knowing that the out would get made. Omar Minaya- trade for Darren Oliver. But-we’re not done. Cliff Floyd is possibly the Met that I loved the most since I have been a fan. I know he was/is injury prone- but I want him back for his attitude.
He kept guys like Reyes and Delgado loose. He especially kept Wright fresh and on his toes. Cliffy and David were great friends, and bringing back Floyd would not only change the morale in the clubhouse, but it would make our third basemen a very happy man. Floyd is loved by the fan base, and was cheered for very loudly on Opening Night at CitiField when he was introduced for the San Diego Padres. He was really happy in New York- and I would bet that he’d love to make a return for a year or two.
But, I’m not the GM. I’m a blogger and a reader of the many Mets fan message boards on the internet. That’s as close as I’ll get. What is done to improve this team is up to Omar. Make the right move.

Ronnie,
Your proposal of reuniting Cliff Floyd and Darren Oliver with the Mets for 2010 is only adding to the cycle of the Mets bringing in injury-prone players or players closer to the end of their careers. How can you justify these moves with a straight face. Let me start with Cliff Floyd, he has had a history of injuries (especially for the past 3-4 years) and he is limited to just hitting. he would take up a roster spot from a bench player who could be more versitale to the team. He is no where near the same player he was in 2006(and that’s not saying much). As for Darren Oliver, he is a Free Agent so the Mets wouldn’t need to trade for him (get your facts straight before you print them). Although he would still be somewhat effective as a left handed specialist out of the bullpen, at 39; he is clearly not the same pitcher when he last wore a Mets uniform. I can live with the idea of looking into Oliver as a possible arm for the bullpen, but only for the league minimium with incentives. Your final paragraph starting with “you’re not the GM” is a god send. Bringing back Floyd is absolutely silly and you need to think twice before you mention that to anyone else. Oliver is more realistic and has substance, again only at league minimium with incentives.
Thanks for the comment Michael.
You’re correct about Oliver being a free agent. That’s my fault.
My reasoning behind Cliff Floyd is simply what I said- for his attitude. There are plenty of players in the league who do not produce much of anything but are great guys to have. I understand this probably won’t happen- but it’s simply my opinion. Nothing more.
Sure Oliver is old, but Omar has had the tendency to bring in old players. What says that is going to change? Oliver would be a great addition to the bullpen- ask any Mets fan.
And I can also guarantee that most Mets fans WANT Cliff Floyd back.
Thanks for reading.

Ronnie,
I hope you don’t think I am joking AT ALL with what I am about to write:
Bringing back Cliff Floyd to be a member of the Mets’ 2010 Major League ball-club is the worst idea I have heard anybody (fan, or otherwise) promulgate in any form at any time on any subject. To give you an idea of some of the competition you are up against, my grandfather mentioned something to me about potentially bringing back David Segui to help “solve” the Mets’ first base woes.
Furthermore, ZERO Mets fans want Cliff Floyd back (aside from you, I suppose). I’m not kidding. Baseball games are already long enough without having to account for the time it will take for Cliff to wheel himself out to his position in Left Field god forbid his motorized wheelchair run out of batteries.
