Who’s playing Left?

Could we see Dye in our future?

Could we see Dye in our future?

I figured we’d start with Left Field as that position seems to be where all the attention is for the 2010 New York Mets. It’s pretty obvious the main target is Matt Holliday. Just for research purposes I want to take some time to peruse the other left field options out there. Because you never know, we might not be able to afford Holliday or Bay. Maybe our money will be thrown at Lackey or get tied up in a trade? Halladay, they say, is still being dangled…..

I want Holliday. I think he plays the game the right way, he is a run producer, he hits for power and is an above average Left fielder. I have no problem with Bay and he reminds me of John Olerud in the way he carries himself. Just think Holliday as a bit more talent than him. Outside of those two the picking is slim.

The Good. Jermaine Dye, who had a player option in which the White Sox bought out. He is 36 years old and always looks tired. But he can hit. With Beltran in center it’s ok if the left fielder is not a defensive whiz. He’s averaged 33 Home Runs a season and driven in 93 on average since 2005. Also went over the 500 AB plateau every year since 2004. Not a bad option if Matt or Jason can’t be bought.

The rest. Yes, it’s ugly after Jermaine. The list reads like some sort of outfielder graveyard sprinkled in with some fading stars. I guess you’d have to look at Rick Ankiel but he’s more of a centerfielder and disappears at the plate for weeks on end. Marlon Byrd had a career year thanks in part to getting the opportunity to swing the bat 500+ times. I don’t know if that warrants a multi-year deal in the Big Apple though. It’s quite an interesting case. Don’t even think about Matsui or Damon because they cannot play the field like we would require. Mike Cameron hits the ball hard or doesn’t hit it at all and he’s also a centerfielder. I don’t think he is a good fit nor do I think Garret Anderson would do well in the cavernous Citi-Field.

I’m not even going to list the rest of the free agents. It’s really bad, unless you think Scott Podsednik is back or you trust a guy like Reed Johnson. My view is if we miss out on Holliday or Bay we turn our attention to Dye. What do you guys think?
