2 Guys We Should be Thankful That Are On Our Team
BY MATTHEW FALKENBURY

The 2009 Season was something was that most people would consider “Thankless”. It was something that Mets fans saw in nightmares and in discussions of “worst case scenarios” at the local sports bar. Then of course it happened and we didn’t know how to react and who to blame first. Many blogs spent time and effort, including this one, trying answer the many questions the Mets Franchise gave us.
The 2010 Season much like the season’s past and in the future has hope attached to it and what happens in the off season will certainly shape how much hope the fan base decides to invests. I was thinking that it was time to show the fan base that maybe its time to finally move on from the negative thoughts the media and our fellow fans have shown us. I felt it was time to give the people who bleed Orange and Blue a few things to be thankful for.
So here they are, after the jump, the Five things that all Mets fans should be thankful for on this Thanksgiving of 2009.
1. A Brand New Ballpark
I’m a little tired of people taking the time to bash a brand new ballpark that is truly the best park in the Tri-State area. The Place is Clean, its Unique and it honors a True American Hero. Just because Jackie Robinson played for the Dodgers doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be honored as someone who is more then just a baseball player. Its almost like saying New York City shouldn’t have named a street after Martin Luther King Jr. because he was based out of Atlanta, Georgia. Either way, Citi Field is a great ballpark and will be home to hopeful much winning and great memories.
2. The Best Left Side of the Infield in Baseball
Go Ahead and Think real hard, and try to find a left side of an infield in baseball that has the kinds of different and wonderful talents that David Wright and Jose Reyes have. They are both under the age of 26 and haven’t even hit there prime yet and of course we looking to trade them, move them around and light candles for them in a church as if they were dying. The Injury to Jose and the down year from Wright were bound to happen, not everyone goes through a career with being banged up or having a down season. Let them get it out of the way now and let us reap the benefits of players who are still improving and can still be a tandem that can bring the World Series title 8 Miles to the East.
3. The Best Left Hander in Baseball
We have Johan Santana and you don’t. That should be our motto when it comes to thinking about the rotation. I mean in 2006 our pitching staff was Orlando Hernandez, 3-13 Olliver Perez, Unknown John Maine, Injured Pedro and the ever mopey Steve Trachsel. And we won 96 Games! This time around we have Johan Santana and of course more of the same after him, but its Johan that Im thankful we have, injury or not and I’m sure its nothing too serious, just a hunch. He is still the best pitcher in the National League and the best lefty in all of baseball. The Mets have that guy and other don’t and im thankful for that.
4. The Best Center Fielder in Baseball
I’m sure that once again the most cynical of Mets fans (Yeah Bitter Bill, talking to you) looks at Carlos Beltran and sees a player who is nothing special, nothing but just some guy who collects a fat check and does just enough. Of course your wrong, and of course you don’t see that Carlos Beltran is one of the better players in Mets history and is the best Center Fielder in baseball. He is someone who is reliable in the field and you know exactly what your gonna get at the plate on the bases. He is the model of consistency on a team that is looked at as anything but consistent. I’m very thankful im having the chance to watch Carlos Beltran during his prime.
5. A Team That at Least Tries to Win
The Pittsburgh Pirates, Kansas City Royals, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians, Baltimore Orioles, Washington Nationals. You think we got it rough, take 2009 and have it happen 17 years in a row and that’s what a Pittsburgh Pirates fan has had to deal with. The Royals had a Cy Young award winner and still almost lost 100 games and the Ohio Teams always seem to take a wrong turn when the right one was to stay on the road it was on. The Mets may be looked at as cheap but at least have spent SOMETHING over the past years and are certainly trying to win titles and not just make it too .500 for the first time in a decade and a half and I’m very thankful for that.

I am thankful for the same.
I just wanted to point out that the “best park in the Tri-State area” isn’t saying much. The only major league ballparks in the tri-state area are Citi Field and Yankee Stadium. And while I’m addressing #1: I have no problem with the Mets honoring Jackie Robinson, but I have a problem with the extent that they have to the exclusion of Mets history. The JR shrine shouldn’t be the first thing you see (and are entirely surrounded with) as soon as you walk into the entrance rotunda. That being said, add a little more orange and blue in the stadium and it won’t seem so overshadowing.
Tom Glavine was also in the 2006 rotation, his last good year. But after how 2007 ended, who can blame you for forgetting him?
