If playing half of every season at 70% is considered staying healthy.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy Beltran as a player. I like him on the Mets, and I root for him. That's not going to change the fact that I watch 140+ games a year, and I can tell you that about half of them, Beltran is playing through a knee injury, or a quad injury, or a hamstring injury.

Him at 70% is still better than most players, but not $20M better.

Games played:

2009: 81
2008: 161
2007: 144
2006: 140
2005: 151

Not horrible....but still averaging missing 2-3 weeks a season...and if you listen to Cohen & Darling, he's always playing with nagging injuries.

I agree with John. After missing the end of last season, coupled with his high salary, not many team will be willing to give up their farm.

Because he has two years left, lets let him play it out this year. Try to get another full, productive year out of him, and look to see what trading opportunities come after next year. He will still be under contract, his value may rise, and the economy might pick up a bit.

I am also not willing to go out and say the "Mets are far from a championship team". In the beginning of the 09 season, SI picked the Mets to win it all. We were in first before the injuries starting knocking out all our stars. I really don't think you can count last year, and if the core stays healthy, who knows what they are capable of (Esp if Omar goes out and gets us a Holliday). Our stars should be well rested...that's for sure.

I do like the idea of giving up a star for some prospects, but personally that star would have to be Reyes. He is the epitome of the "all talent, no brains" mets that have been breaking our hearts for years.

I don't think Carlos Beltran's stock is as high as you think. He makes $20M a year, can't stay healthy, and is several years older than he was when he signed his contract.

In addition to this being a much different economy, one in which Beltran would never get the contract he has today if he were a current free agent, no team is going to give up talent to take on a $20M liability from an aging injury prone player.

He's still a great player, but the Mets would have to contribute cash to make any deal for prospects happen. Trading him now would be to clear salary, not acquire top prospects.
