Most Mets fans who follow the minor league affiliates may have noticed that righty Dillon Gee threw a gem for the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons on Tuesday night, beating the Syracuse Chiefs, 6-1. He allowed a run on three hits while striking out six in seven innings.
But it was one pitch that proved the type of player and teammate Gee is.
With two outs, nobody on and the Bisons leading 4-0 in the top of the sixth, Gee hit Chiefs’ outfielder Leonard Davis square in the back of his right shoulder with a fastball. A seemingly normal mistake, except for one thing – Davis is the guy who took out Daniel Murphy at second base on June 2, tearing Murphy’s MCL and ending his season. Davis eventually scored in the inning, but the Bisons were glad to trade a run for Gee’s apparent action.
Clearly, Gee was standing up for his fallen teammate, something young pitchers don’t do as often as they should.
Murphy’s injury came on a play that angered Bisons players and coaches, according to Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News at the time. Bisons’ Andy Green, he of an 11-year career, called it the dirtiest play he’d ever seen.
Gee was asked after the game Tuesday about the pitch that hit Davis. Rodney McKissic wrote in his story (http://www.buffalonews.com/2010/06/29/1098958/dillon-turns-the-page-for-bisons.html) in The Buffalo News, “Said Gee about the pitch with a smile as wide as the Cheshire Cat: ‘It just got away from me.’ ”
That’s the ultimate sign of a pitcher being a good teammate. It’s impossible to tell right now if Gee will ever pitch in a meaningful role for the Mets, but you can guarantee that if he does, he’ll be the type of pitcher his teammates love.

Good for Dillon Gee. Murphy did’nt deserve a dirty play to end his season as he had already lost the starting job at First due to a prior injury in the same knee area. As the murph was known as a team player so is Dillon Gee.
My other complaint is why no comment from Minaya to the Syracuse team about the dirty playor to Washington who is their major league partner. We dont want other player injured by Leonard Davis.
Dillon Gee will make it to the big leagues and serve his team and teammates well. Any pitcher who stands up for a fallen teammate in the 6th inning of a 4-0 shutout is a first class ball-player. Old school, Dillon. You were right.
