Rebuilding?

Luis Castillo might be one guy who needs to go.

After another disappointing loss I cant help but think that this particular Met team lead by the likes of David Wright, and others needs to be broken up and rebuilt, if the Mets continue this season in mediocrity it will be essentially three wasted seasons since 2006 when the Mets last made a playoff appearance.
It may be tough to swallow for some fans but maybe the best move for the future of the Mets is too rebuild and think 2-3 years down the line rather then keep adding pieces to an already scarred core.

According to Mets.com the Mets have inked Wily Mo Pena to a minor league deal. He is scheduled to report to AAA Buffalo.
This is a depth move and nothing more, the only chance you will see Pena this year is in either September or if injuries strike.
Mets to Move Doc’s Signature

According to Metsblog.com the Mets plan to move Dwight Goodens much talked about signature in the Ebbets Club to another location and create a Mets wall for former players to sign. The Team is also aware of all the complaints about the lack of Mets history in the building and plan to address it in the coming weeks
Marlon Andersons Days are Numbered

Marlon Anderson May be Playing his Final Game as a Met Tonight

According to Adam Rubin of the Daily News, Marlon Anderson is likely to be dumped from the roster in favor of Livan Hernandez who will be activated prior to Saturday night’s game
Really it’s the only move the Mets can make right now. You can’t send Jeremy Reed down as you need his defense in the outfield, and with the way the Mets rotation has looked so far you cannot afford to go down to 11 pitchers. Marlon also hasn’t made a huge case for himself as he hasn’t looked like a major league hitter since September 2007, and with Nick Evans waiting in the wings it’s not like his position couldn’t be filled internally if a need for an extra bat arises in the coming weeks.
The Enigma Known as Oliver Perez

Perez Struggles Again

Yesterday Oliver Perez went out and pitched a disaster game. Staked to a 3-0 lead Perez imploded and his final line saw him giving up 8 runs. The problem is no one should be shocked. I have spent all morning hearing people rant and rave on Perez. Honestly though as Mets fans we need to look in the mirror and ask ourselves “did you really expect anything different”.
Ever since the Mets acquired Perez in the summer of 2006 it has been an up and down rollercoaster with him. Looking at the stats over the last couple of years Oliver Perez has had 18 starts since the beginning of 2006 in which he has completed less than 5 innings, and 20 starts since 2006 in which he has walked at least 5 batters. The fact is while most Mets fans will rant and rave over Perez for at least another week, we as Mets fans just need to accept what he is and that is a complete gamble. One start Perez will throw like Sandy Koufax and the next start he will look like the pitching version of Roger Cedeno.
I don’t even blame the Mets for this predicament though as the Mets clearly exhausted every option in attempt not too bring Perez back this offseason. They flirted with Derek Lowe for awhile and went to the final stages with him before he spurned the Mets and signed with Atlanta. They also talked trade with the White Sox for Vazquez before losing him also to Atlanta. They only brought Perez back because they were desperate but even Omar Minaya will say that Perez is a complete gamble in every start. Fact is as Mets fans we just need to start accepting Perez for who he is and that is a screwball of a pitcher who on his best nights will dominate and on his worst nights walk 8 guys.
More Thoughts on Opening Day

K-Rod will envoke a new fear in National League hitters.

The Mets today passed the first test of the season winning a close game they surely would have lost one year ago. The 2007 Mets would have fought long and hard to blow a game like this, whether it was Heilman, Wagner, or one of the other many failed relievers of the 2007 season.
This was a good game for the Mets to play on opening day as I am sure it flashed through every players mind the bullpens struggles when Green came in the game in the sixth, the difference though is the Mets had confident relievers today who showed poise and leadership on the mound instead of the sulking confused looks we became all too familiar with in 2007.
A win like this today should go a long way towards reversing the players and fans expectations when the Mets have a lead. I was particularly impressed with Green who showcased a wicked sidearm sinker and looked flawless on the mound. Putz and Krod also were very impressive in their Mets debut. Overall the first test was passed today and next up we get to see if Pelfrey can continue his success from last year.
