PreGame: Mets (65-65) @ Atlanta (75-55)
BY BRYAN ROTHENSTEIN
STACHE WRITER
Tonight the Mets open up a 10 game road trip beginning with 4 in Hotlanta. If there is any time left for us to make a run, it is now. They begin the series 10 back of the Braves in the NL East and 8 back of the Phillies in the Wild Card race with 32 left to play.
New York Mets’ Lineup:
1. Angel Pagan CF
2. Luis Castillo 2B
3. Chris Carter LF
4. David Wright 3B
5. Ike Davis 1B
6. Jeff Francoeur RF
7. Josh Thole C
8. Luis Hernandez SS
9. Pat Misch LHP
This lineup doesn’t leave much to be desired with Castillo, Hernandez and Carter and without Beltran or Reyes. It is what it is and let’s just hope that our pitching can stay hot in the most crucial part of the season. I am not sure why Carter gets so much playing time but then again we would need someone to fill in for him and it is again another season where the Mets have run out of quality replacements and bench players, proving further why Minaya needs to step down as GM.
Interesting Fact/Trend: With as bad as our offense has been since the break, surprisingly enough over the last 14 days David Wright is batting .360 with 4 homeruns, 13 runs and keeps him on pace for a very solid overall offensive season. Too bad no one else besides Pagan showed much at the plate this season, but as we say every other season, there’s always next year .. right?!
Atlanta Braves’ Lineup:
1. Omar Infante 2B
2. Jason Heyward RF
3. Martin Prado 3B
4. Derek Lee 1B
5. Brian McCann C
6. Matt Diaz LF
7. Alex Gonzalez SS
8. Melky Cabrera CF
9. Jair Jurrjens RHP
As if they actually needed extra incentive, the braves will look to carry last games walk off momentum into this 4 game series against the division rival Mets, but as everyone knows, a lot more is at stake for the quickly dropping Mets then for the Braves. The Braves had led the NL East for most of the season and although they have lost Met killer Larry Jones, a replacement was quickly found in the bat of Derek Lee.
Interesting Fact/Trend: After McCann’s last game video reviewed walkoff, the Braves now lead all of Major League Baseball with 23 wins in their final at bat this season.
On The Bump: The Mets hand the ball to Pat Misch who is 0-3 with a 3.50 ERA since being recalled from the minors. Spotty defense and lack of offense have killed Misch thus far and he looks to pick up his first win with another solid outing against the Braves. Misch has never beaten the Braves, or fared well against them in any role for that matter. Overall against them he is 0-2 with a 10+ ERA and last September, his last start against them, surrendered 8 runs, 3 homeruns, in an 11-3 Mets loss.
The Braves will counter with Jair Jurrjens who enters the night with a 5-4 record to go with a 4.36 ERA. Jurrjens has owned the Mets in his career posting a 6-2 record against them with a 2.62 ERA. He has been even stingier at home in 3 starts against the division foes posting an ERA below 1 in 3 starts.
Stache’s Keys to the Game
Nail In The Coffin
BY BRYAN ROTHENSTEIN

The nail in the coffin,
It happened tonight,
Rubber game vs the Marlins,
We lacked a good fight.
Wright got us going,
With a gargantuan blast,
His 21st of the season,
11 more then his last.
It came to the sixth,
With the team up by two,
When Niese really lost it,
All of Citi Field booed.
The decision was easy,
Just go to the mound,
They had guys up warming,
Yet Manuel stood his ground.
7 runnings in an inning,
Your destined for doom,
It’s time for the front office,
To break out the broom.
You can’t win a game,
When your starter implodes,
The Marlins kept feasting,
11 runs on the road.
Call in Jerry,
Omar Minaya too,
Hand them their papers,
And bid them adieu.
Minaya and Jerry,
Must take the blame,
If not for them,
Their’d be less shame.
Find us a winner,
Bobby V or Torre would do,
And for Ollie and Luis,
They can leave with ya’ll too!
Mets Stage Late Rally; Get Hooked by Fish 5-4
BY SCOTT ILOWITE
STACHE WRITER
For the second straight night, the Mets fought back with a late game rally. But tonight they fell one run short. Pat Misch started for the Mets tonight and was not very effective early on. He was wild in the 1st inning but escaped with only one run allowed. But unfortunately, the Marlins had single runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings as well. Misch settled down in innings 4 and 5, but allowed a 2 out double in the 6th that gave the fish a 4-1 lead.
Once again the Mets bats were completely silent for most of the game. It seems like in the last 5 years, rookie pitchers/pitchers the Mets haven’t seen before, are a combined 95-10 against them. In the 4th, 5th and 6th innings, the Mets were sent down 1-2-3. Ryota Igarashi came on in the 7th inning and promptly gave up a run on a Logan Morrison triple and a Hanley Ramirez single to make it 5-1.
The Mets staged a rally in the 7th with a triple by Ike Davis that scored David Wright, and a single by Frenchy that scored Davis. Now trailing 5-3, Josh Thole walked to load the bases. And in true Mets fashion, Chris Carter grounded out and Louie Castillo flied out. The Mets are now, as Howie Rose stated, an “incomprehensible 20 for 101 with the bases-loaded this season.”
In the bottom of the 9th, Leo Nunez came in to close for the Marlins. David Wright greeted him rudely on his 3rd pitch. Wright sent a blast just to the right of the apple in center field for his 20th homer of the year. Now working with only a 5-4 lead, the Mets made Nunez work. After Ike popped out, Frenchy and Thole singled up the middle. With runners at 1st and 2nd, Mike Hessman grounded softly to short for a fielders choice. Louie Castillo followed with a walk to load the bases again. So with 2 outs and the bases loaded, Jose Reyes had a chance to win the game. Now, for some reason, with Wes Helms playing almost on the outfield dirt at first base, Reyes hit a fairly hard grounder to him and the game was over. Jose…you have to know the situation and who’s playing the corners there. YOU NEED TO PULL A BUNT TO FIRST! There was no way in hell Wes Helms would be able to field a bunt and make a play on him. It just infuriates me to see a play like that.
Turning Point – By not scoring runs in the 7th inning with the bases loaded, the Mets once again killed a potential big inning. That was their chance to really kill the Marlins morale and even the game up. But like it’s been for the past 3 years, the Mets inability to get a hit with the bases loaded has become almost comical.
Game Ball – David Wright was 2 for 4 with a 9th inning home run and 3 runs scored. It’s a flat out shame that when David is hot, the top of the lineup goes 0-12. Just pathetic. I don’t want to give one to the Marlins, but I feel like I have to. Hanley Ramirez was 4 for 5 tonight and is 7 for 10 so far in this series.
Next Game -Tomorrow night, Anibal Sanchez (10-8, 3.16 ERA) faces off against Jonathan Niese (8-5, 3.33 ERA) in the rubber game of this 3 game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10pm
Niese, Wright Lead Mets to Rain-Shortened 5-1 Win
BY RANDY SHEMANSKI
STACHE WRITER
Just a few hours after manager Jerry Manuel and pitching coach Dan Warthen talked to the media about a possible innings limit on rookie Jon Niese, the lefty turned in another strong outing in a rain-shortened, 5-1 win over the Pirates.
Niese allowed a run on five hits and a walk while fanning five in five innings. It’ll go in the books as a complete game after heavy rain forced a delay and the eventual end of the game after five innings. The victory was Niese’s first since July 27, but his fourth straight start in which he allowed one or no runs; he earned no-decisions in the other three. He improved to 8-5 with a 3.33 ERA with the win.
Niese has now thrown 138 innings, easily a career high. At just 23 years old, the Mets will discuss how to use him over the season’s final six weeks when they return home. Manuel said before the game that it would be difficult to put Niese on an innings limit while trying to win games. Warthen seemed to be in favor of a limit. With the Mets on the fringe of contending – they’re just 62-61 – they’d be wise to protect Niese unless they get hot and using him could give them a chance to reach the playoffs.

His Mets Moment
The bright smile, the youthful exuberance, the power, the speed, the arm and the glove. David Wright had it all when the 2006 season came around for the New York Mets. He was the future of the franchise and the best young 3rd baseman in the game. What you see today is someone beaten over the head by the pressure of playing in New York. But in 2006, there wasnt a care in the world for David Wright.
On May 19th, 2006 against the hated New York Yankees at Shea Stadium, David Wright had his moment and it was against the greatest closer of all time, Mariano Rivera that he got the job done.
In a game where the Mets started Geremi Gonzalez against the Big Unit Randy Johnson, the Mets feel behind 4-0 before even coming to bat. The Mets would get 3 runs back in the bottom half on a Carlos Beltran Home Run. The game was a slugfest through the first half of the game as the score was tied at 6 after 5 innings.
With the Game tied in the bottom of the 9th inning, the Yankees, going against the book, brought in closer Mariano Rivera in a tie game on the road to take on the Mets top of the order.
Jose Reyes popped out to shortstop and Paul LoDuca doubled down the left field line and put the winning run in scoring position for the Mets 3-4-5 hitters.
Carlos Beltran would strikeout swinging and the Yankees, knowing that Carlos Delgado had more experience facing Rivera, walked Delgado Intentionally to face David Wright, a common occurance early in Wright’s career.
On a 2-2 pitch that was down near his Ankles, Wright hit a deep drive to Center Field that Johnny Damon was trying to catch to force extra innings. The ball kept going and as Wright was jumping up and down along the 1st base line, the Ball hit the warning track and one hopped the fence.
Paul LoDuca scored the winning run and David Wright had not only won the game with a walk off hit, but did it at home, against the Yankees and against Mariano Rivera. David had arrived and for now, and I hold out hope that this will change soon, He had his Mets moment.

Post-Game: Mets 3, Astros 1

Oh the stars at night…are big and bright…
The Mets opened a 4-game series tonight against the Houston Astros in beautiful Minute Maid Park. The Mets showed some spunkiness and fight tonight as they took the first game by a score of 3-1.
How long has it been since the Mets have been able to say that pitching wasn’t an immediate problem? Lefty Jonathon Niese pitched another brilliant game, going 7 innings, with 1 run and 5 strikeouts, which is bizarrely like his last two starts (both of which were 7 innings, 1 run and 7 K’s). Spooky. On the downside, he records yet another no-decision as the game was tied 1-1 when he departed after the 7th inning.
On the defensive side of things, David Wright seems to have pissed himself off enough that he was absolutely great in the field tonight. He caught a few line drives and made some great stops. Luis Castillo showed why he still wants to start as well by making some great plays tonight as well. Throw in Mike Hessman (Ike Davis sat against lefty Wandy Rodriguez) and you had something cooking tonight!
Post Game: Phillies 3, Mets 1

To start things off on a bright note, at least the Mets were not shut out tonight.
Now back to the harsh reality. The Mets have not won a single game all season when trailing after 8 innings. So the fact that they scored a run was of little consolation as they lost yet another game, another series, and to the Phillies who they are chasing in the NL East and Wild Card race.
The most disappointing thing with all of these losses is the fact that our pitching has been doing so well and it has become our offense and defense that has been letting us down. The Mets are now 10 games out and it might be time to start thinking about how to fix things for next season. As much as I hate to say it, this teams leaves little in terms of hope for the near future.
Tonight’s game featured yet another lackluster offensive performance as they were only able to manage 1 run off of Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick, who earned his 8th win of the season.
On the other side, Pelfrey continued to work towards regaining his early season success by only allowing 3 runs in 7 innings to go along with o walks and 1 strikeout. The pitching continues to impress as the offense continues to take an extended vacation.
David Wright still can’t seem to get on track. Although he managed a hit and walk he made yet another error in the field bringing his total to 15 on the season. Since the All-Star break Wright is batting only .198 and seems to be pressing. It is understandable with Bay being out and Beltran fighting to find his way but they need him to just relax and be David Wright not Superman.

CitiField has seen its third shutout game in three days. At a time when their team really needed their starters to step up, Johan Santana and R.A. Dickey threw back-to-back complete game shutouts. Would Mets fans see a hat trick?
Well, yes…except that tonight’s shutout win went to the opposing team. The formidable Roy Halladay (15-8) threw 8 scoreless innings and racked up 7 strikeouts in the 4-0 Mets loss, bringing their short-lived 2-game winning streak to an abrupt end.
There is one thing the Mets should be happy with…the return of Pat Misch (11-4 in AAA; 0-1 with Mets).
I want to get one thing out of the way. I love Pat Misch. I loved him last year and I’m happy to see him back this year. Was he stellar last year? Not particularly, but he held his own and was someone you could count on, and it seems that has carried over to this year.
Misch pitched 6 innings, and although the Phillies scored 4 runs against him, only 1 was earned and he came away with a game ERA of 1.50, 2 strikeouts and 2 walks. It looks like we will be seeing more of him, as it was announced that he will pitch in Houston.
Post-Game: Robert Allen Dickey 1, Phillies ZERO

The things that baseball can provide someone with a love of facts are sometimes more unbelievable as you mention them.
The Mets had their Closer suspended for two games, and they get two straight Complete Game Shutouts. The Phillies have lost all four games this season to the Mets in Citi Field and not once have they scored a Run. The only two CG, One Hit Shutouts by the Mets this season have been by Jon Niese and R.A. Dickey.
Its always fun to watch a game like this and realize just what your watching is so special that no matter where the team is, and will be for one night, you feel so great.
Tonight was the perfect storm of dominance, fan jubilation, the right visiting team, the right pitcher and the right time that this win would come together.
The Mets are 4-2 in their last 6 games and that is something to work with and with the schedule starting to get easier and easier, Meaningfulness in September on the Field could be achieved.
But for one night, thanks to a pitcher nobody thought would make a difference, R.A. Dickey provided a spark and we hope it turns into a raging fire.
David Wright Looks Like David Wrong
For some reason that I cannot explain, I am sitting in my bedroom watching the Mets vs. Rockies game. That’s almost as crazy as what I did last night, which is attend the Mets against Ubaldo Jimenez show in person, which I still cannot believe they won. Some people say that the Mets can now wipe the slate clean and start fresh at .500, but is that the case with David Wright?
I think not.
David looks completely lost at the plate right now, and he has now had dry spells like this on many different occasions this year. What’s causing it? Do you want to blame the home run derby? I don’t, but I think the hitter we used to know as David Wright has definitely evolved into something else.
First of all, what happened to the patience? You know the Mets are in trouble when the most patient hitters on the team are Angel Pagan and Josh Thole. But Wright goes up to the plate, and his at-bats have gotten very predictable. Shall I walk you through it? Alright.
