There is an interesting topic brewing in spring training. A revisit of an old topic that just will not go away. The use of performance enhancing drugs. Every spring, it seems as if this question is raised or brought up. Whenever a player comes into camp, trimmer or more muscular, they are said to be ‘in better shape’. In the back of everyone’s collective mind, however, it is pondered. Last season it was Alex Rodriguez facing a whirlwind of media. Who’s under the microscope now? Two leaders of the New York Mets, David Wright and Jose Reyes.

First, let’s discuss Jose Reyes. Reyes has been involved in a public relations nightmare involving a Canadian doctor, Dr. Anthony Galea.

“A lot of people talked about (Galea),” Reyes said. “I wanted to come back so bad to the field to play, so I say, ‘Why not? Let’s try this guy and see if he can fix me.’ ”

Can David Wright step up his home run total? (PHOTO BY ICON SMI)

Can David Wright step up his home run total? (PHOTO BY ICON SMI)

David Wright has two Gold Glove awards. He has all star appearances. He even has the ‘captain’ status on a major sports franchise in New York. He seemingly has everything. That everything includes a power outage in his teams’ new ballpark. We’ve all been through this, I know, but the numbers don’t lie. Allow me to briefly visit this topic in light of a recent interview David Wright has given. Since he broke into the league in 2004, he has not had a full season of less than 26 home runs or 100 RBI’s until last year. He had a career high in season strikeouts with 140 and career low in season hits with 164.

This could just be one bad year. Let’s hope so, after all every major player has a bad year or two. We don’t have to look too far for an example of this. For all of the slack that Carlos Beltran has had recently, he has been a very productive player, not only for the Mets, but in his career. Beltran has had only three full seasons of less than 20 home runs. Two of them occurred while injured, one of which was last year. The other was directly after signing a major contract and having to adjust to the media jungle that is New York. He bounced back to have a monster year after that.

Grab a slice Mets Fans, their is plenty where this came from

I don’t know about the rest of you, but the longer the Jets made their run into the playoffs the more I was able to stay blissful in a time where my favorite baseball team was shooting itself in the foot day in and day out. Just when you thought maybe things were gonna break the Mets way, they didn’t, and what had happened in 2009 seemed to be carrying over in 2010.

Now after a week or so to sit back and think about what has gone down with the New York Mets in this off season, I can only seem to think this is exactly what we needed to have happen. Now I’m sure your wondering what exactly I’m talking about.

Lets face facts, this team and its expectations have been very high for the last four years or so. In fact I think we have all caught a little bit of what I like to call “Yankee Fan Disease”. What I’m talking about is that we all seem to think that the Mets are just entitled to just about all the praise one can heap on them and that winning a championship is a formality. As we have seen the past four seasons, that is not the case.

It's a match made in heaven.

With this week’s events regarding Carlos Beltran’s knee surgery and the details of what was felt when and what doctors were consulted, there has been a lot of negativity towards both the players and the Mets management.

If a player complains about an injury, he is considered “soft” by the fans, which may or not be true, but without medical degrees or putting our body what these professional athletes do all year, we really do not have the authority to pass judgement or take sides on these matters.

The Mets management wants Citi Field to be full in 2010 and the PR efforts have been under way all week, especially with David Wright, Daniel Murphy, John Maine and Mike Pelfrey putting in extensive time conducting radio interviews, giving tours of Citi Field and other social events.

Carlos Zambrano would look nice as the Mets number two starter.

Carlos Zambrano’s name has been floating around quite a bit in Mets news this winter.

Being that it has been such a quiet winter for the Mets, player wise, you do have to give some credibility to names being discussed as possibility for being Flushing, NY-bound in 2010.

Much has been said about Zambrano and his temper along with not keeping himself in shape, in other words Ollie Perez in need of anger management classes.

This Decade Has Seen Alot, Including The End of an Era at Shea Stadium

This Decade Has Seen Alot, Including The End of an Era at Shea Stadium

The Decade of the 2000’s for the Mets has been filled with up’s and down’s, joy and sadness and one that took us on a roller coaster that began witha National League Championship, dipped through some lean years from 2002-2004, saw a rebirth and an NL East Title in 2005 and 2006, the collapses of 2007-2008, the ending of one era at Shea and a new one at Citi Field and finally an injury filled 2009 season that leaves us wondering whats next. Over the past 10 years, we have seen some great players come and go, and for some, leave a mark that will be remembered forever, good or bad. So in honor of a Decade in Mets history that was nothing short of a Ride of highs and lows, I give to you my All-Decade Team for the New York Mets.

Some Quick Rules, only stats in the years of this current decade were counted, the player must have spent at least one year with the franchise and the success of the franchise during his time with the team will also be in consideration. Off Fied and On Field impact will also be considered when making the decision as well.

Christmas Time is my favorite part of the Year and In honor of that, i have taken the wonderful poem T’was the Night Before Christmas and added a little blue and Orange to the Party….ENJOY!!

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the Citi
Not a creature was stirring, not even a Reyes.
The stockings were hung by the Apple with care,
In hopes that St Omar soon would be there.

The Mets Fans were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of Jason Bay danced in their heads.
And Manuel in the Dugout, and Fred looking like a sap,
Had just settled their brains for a long winter’s nap.

Omar Minaya will be in Puerto Rico monitoring Carlos Delgado, who is playing Winter Ball to prove to himself and the Mets, along with any other potential suitors, that he is fully healed from hip surgery and will be a vital part of any team in 2010.

Delgado only played in 36 games in 2009 before needing surgery to repair his hip, which had been a chronic issue for several years.  The ironic part is that Delgado played in the WBC just fine for Team Puerto Rico last March, the hip problem was not even discussed by the team or media.

David Wright has been the “de facto Captain” for more than two years but it has not been made official by the Mets.   The last official Captain was John Franco, who does provide guidance to Wright in clubhouse leadership.

2 Guys We Should be Thankful That Are On Our Team

2 Guys We Should be Thankful That Are On Our Team

BY MATTHEW FALKENBURY

The 2009 Season was something was that most people would consider “Thankless”. It was something that Mets fans saw in nightmares and in discussions of “worst case scenarios” at the local sports bar. Then of course it happened and we didn’t know how to react and who to blame first. Many blogs spent time and effort, including this one, trying answer the many questions the Mets Franchise gave us.

The 2010 Season much like the season’s past and in the future has hope attached to it and what happens in the off season will certainly shape how much hope the fan base decides to invests. I was thinking that it was time to show the fan base that maybe its time to finally move on from the negative thoughts the media and our fellow fans have shown us. I felt it was time to give the people who bleed Orange and Blue a few things to be thankful for.

So here they are, after the jump, the Five things that all Mets fans should be thankful for on this Thanksgiving of 2009.

Carlos Delgado played 26 games for the Mets in 2009 before having hip surgery, and it is doubtful that he will return to the Mets in 2010, there are a lot of unanswered questions about his health.

Delgado, along with Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes, and David Wright are considered the Mets core players and as everyone knows, three of the four missed significant time in 2009 with no real promise that any or all of them will be  healthy for the start of the 2010 season.
