Mets looking into voiding K-Rod’s contract

BY RANDY SHEMANSKI
STACHE WRITER

SI.com’s Jon Heyman is reporting here that the Mets are looking into voiding Francisco Rodriguez’s contract following the discovery of the torn ligament in his right hand that will require season-ending surgery. According to Heyman, the Mets may have grounds to try to void the deal because the injury was suffered outside the course of play. However, as Heyman points out, the players’ union could have a strong case against that, as they’ve already blocked the team from suspending K-Rod for more than two games following the alleged assault.

Rodriguez’s contract includes $11.5 million in 2011 and a vesting option worth $17.5 million for 2012. To activate that option, Rodriguez must finish 100 total games between 2010 and 2011, including at least 55 in 2011. He’s already finished 46 games this season, which means if he reached the 55-game threshold next season, he’d be at 101 over two years, which would activate the option.

My thoughts on this whole nightmare …

Anyone following the Mets closely knows they have financial problems that stem from the Bernie Madoff scandal. How big those problems are, nobody knows, but they’ve already showed signs that they’re going to move forward with a younger, cheaper roster next season. Voiding K-Rod’s contract would be a big boost in that area and would allow the team to possibly make a mid-level free agent move this coming offseason to try to compete in the NL East.

K-Rod Hurt, Needs Surgery

BY MATTHEW FALKENBURY
EDITOR

According to multiple reports, Francisco Rodriguez has a torn ligament in his Thumb and is not with the team in Houston and will most likely need surgery to fix it which could keep him out for the rest of the season.

This is just unbelieveable, you have to imagine that this has something to do with the fight he had with his common law Father in Law this past Wednesday.

You make this stuff up at this point, but I guess in the end, the Mets couldnt suspend him longer, but K-Rod has done it to himself by getting an injury that will knock him out for the season.

I think that this contract will go right in line with the other disasters that Omar has given to this franchise over the past few seasons. He has had some positives but the negatives are getting to be too much for this team to overcome.

Thanks alot K-Rod for not having Common Sense and thanks Omar for bringing in another embarassment to the Mets franchise.

Mets In Dire Need of Some Relief

BY MATT ESPOSITO
STACHE WRITER

Throughout the season, the Mets bullpen situation has certainly been a sticky one. Even the pasts most reliable names have not come through for the team this year.

A bullpen is comprised of pitchers who can come into a game in various situations to provide a reliable effort to help hold down the fort. The Mets haven’t seen nearly enough of that this year.

Instead, the bullpen has provided them with constant headaches and question marks. Its been ugly on so many levels. Coming into the year, Pedro Feliciano and Fernando Nieve were expected to be two of the Mets elite late-inning arms. Fingers could be pointed at manager Jerry Manuel for mis-using the guys, but their numbers have looked like pure misery.

Feliciano has been a go-to specialist for years now in the Mets bullpen. He’s led the NL in games pitched for two years in a row and currently leads the league in that category now. Overall, he hasn’t  quite been himself. It goes beyond the solid ERA that has masked his weaknesses.

It’s Time to Take a Stand

BY SCOTT ILOWITE

When I went to bed Wednesday night, I turned the TV on like I usually do. I pop on MLB Network or ESPN, and set the sleep timer. But when I turned the TV on, I didn’t expect the lead story to have anything to do with the Mets after a 6-2 loss to the Rockies.

I forgot who the anchor was, but when I heard “Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez has been arrested and charged with 3rd degree assault after an altercation with his common-law wife’s father in the Mets family lounge”, I was stunned.

About 5 seconds later I just said out loud, “WHAT THE F*@K?!”. In a season of complete misery, it just got worse.  So for the last 36 hours, we’ve heard about 40 different reports of what happened. I’m not going to go over it, because I’m sure you all have heard the same things.

It’s just a shame that I couldn’t turn on WFAN while on the way home from work, and listen to all the callers compliment Johan Santana for his incredible complete game shutout.

K-Rod Arrested After Altercation at Citi Field

BY MATTHEW FALKENBURY
EDITOR

UPDATE VIA AP: NEW YORK (AP) -New York Mets reliever Francisco Rodriguez is in custody after what police called a “physical assault” on his father-in-law at Citi Field.

Police say Rodriguez will be charged with third-degree assault. Police say the pitcher hasn’t been arrested.

Police say the incident occurred after the Mets’ 6-2 loss to the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night. Police say Rodriguez’s father-in-law is in the hospital with a scrape on his face and a bump on his head.

The Mets confirmed there was an incident between Rodriguez and his family, and referred all questions to the police.

According to Multiple Reports, Mets Closer Francisco Rodriguez was Arrested after getting into an Altercation with his Father-In-Law after tonight’s game against the Rockies.

He had been upset after not being used in tonight’s game in the 8th inning and was apparently not in the speaking mood with the media after the game in the clubhouse.

The Post says he has been charged with Assult, although ESPN’s Adam Rubin is reporting that it has not happened as of yet.

He had to be taken out of Citi Field by Security and according to the NY Daily News was cursing and screaming at people who were watching the scene.

Newsday is also reporting that K-Rod will be charged with 3rd Degree Assult.

In my opinion, K-Rod has just added a real life element to a sports team and when that happens, the line is always very blurry. The fact is that what he did is an absolute joke and just a disgusting thing to do to a family member.

The Mets have enough problems on the field of play, and when you add this off the field issue it just makes things that much worse. I dont care about his affect on the ball club as a player. He is a jerk and I wouldnt mind seeing him off the team for the rest of the season.

An Open Letter to K-Rod

Dear K-Rod,

Remember that time you had 62 saves that year? Yeah, that was awesome. Also, remember that time you used to throw 97 or 98mph? Those were some good times too. I love how earlier in the year; you looked great with the glasses on again. It brought out the intimidation again that your game had.

But you know what? It’s just not working right now. Maybe if you need to keep your mind fresh, you can start-up another tomato garden out there underneath the Shea Bridge?

When you are in the game, I’ll tend to it and make sure it gets plenty of water. When you are on a road trip, I’ll have the grounds crew throw a little extra Miracle-Grow down for you.

Looking Back: Four Years After The Curve

Has It Really Been Four Years?

Has It Really Been Four Years?

BY BRYAN ROTHENSTEIN
STACHE WRITER

This is the 4th season since our last post season appearance which ended with a curve unlike any other.

It was the bottom of the 9th, 2 outs and the Mets needing a big hit from their big hitter. Beltran vs Wainwright. A curve that no hitter from to Ted Williams to Albert Pujols would be able to hit was snapped off and that ended the game and a dream for many a Mets fan.

It was such a disappointing night, especially after the amazing catch by Endy Chavez, who leapt up and into the wall to rob a homerun giving the Mets, the media and their diehard fan base a reason to believe it was meant to be. But then Yadier *#!?# Molina.

Putting them up by 1 run. And that curve. I still can see Beltran in the batters box with his bat on his shoulder, nothing he could do and that ended our season and seemingly the last opportunity for the fans to enjoy playoff baseball in Queens.

Mets At The Break

The Mets end the first half of the season with a much needed victory against the division leading Braves lead by a resurrected Johan Santana performance, going 7 strong innings and shutting out the Braves for his 7th win against 5 losses in the first half. On the day, Santana allowed 5 hits, 3 walks and striking out 5 all while lowering his season ERA to 2.98. Pretty impressive overall ERA for a guy considered by many to be washed up and no longer an ace! The game was capped off by K-Rod who picked up his 21st save of the season.

The Mets end the first half on a bit of a downfall but were able to pull out this big win to head into the break. Over the last 10 games they are 4-6 and finish with a 30-16 home record and a 18-24 road record, which is quite impressive after their awful start.

At the break the NL East standings are as follows:

1. Braves 52-36 0 GB
2. Mets 48-40 4GB
3. Phillies 47-40 4.5 GB
4. Marlins 42-46 10 GB
5. Nationals 39-50 13.5 GB

He Never Makes It Easy

He Never Makes It Easy

BY BRYAN ROTHENSTEIN

What The Hell!

R.A. Dickey continues to impress and astonish and at this point he has to be surprising himself with how successful, and dominant, he has been. He pitched a solid 7 innings tonight and left the game tied 2-2 but the Mets hitters provided him some support by scoring 3 runs and setting him up for another win.

Next came Parnell, who will always worry me regardless of the 98 MPH heat and nasty slider. I still have images of his body of work from last season and he has a lot more work to do before I will become a believer. But he did not disappoint on this afternoon and pitched a solid inning providing a bridge to Mr. Alkaseltzer, Frankie Rodriguez.

It is impossible to feel calm and or confident when K-Rod enters the game no matter what the situation may be and despite being up by 2 runs entering the botom of the 9th inning, K-Rod once again pulled out the tight rope routine walking 2 and giving up a single to face Adam Dunn with 1 out. The first thought that went through my mind was of course he will get Dunn here and instill hope in all Mets faithful only to give up the game to whoever is to follow and low and behold that was almost what happened.

Bullpen Troubles Raise Questions

What's wrong with K-Rod? (PHOTO BY ICON/SMI)

FRANK GRAY

The New York Mets thought they had all of their late inning troubles behind them on December 8th, 2008. That’s when they signed Francisco Rodriguez to a three year deal. Rodriguez, known throughout the league as K-Rod, joined the team after a record setting season with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

During the ’08 season, he amassed 62 saves and became the highly sought after free agent of that off season. The Mets, who had struggled with the late game facet of their bullpen immediately and aggressively pursued him. After joining them, he has had an interesting season and a half as the Mets closer.

He accumulated 35 saves with a 3-6 record and a 3.71 ERA last season. Not the most impressive of lines. He was on a badly injured team, so with this in consideration, the fans decided to give him another chance. This season, he already has four blown saves in 24 chances. The rest of his line is not too bad though. He holds a 2.57 ERA with 20 saves.
