This has been a difficult week for the New York Mets. In particularly, it has been especially difficult for one Jose Reyes. Your heart really has to go out to him. At the beginning of the week, reports had surfaced about a connection he had to Dr. Galea in Toronto. Galea is under investigation for using illegal substances to treat clients in rehabbing injuries.

Then, it is revealed, that Reyes was only questioned in the investigation because teammate Carlos Beltran had tipped them to Reyes. He then, has the only bright spot of his week in the form of a triple in his first game.

This is followed by days of being penciled into the lineup only to be scratched before game time for medical reasons and was sent back to New York for further evaluation. Those medical reasons were revealed today and the news may not be very good. Jose Reyes has, by his own admission, an overactive thyroid.

Anyone Else Worried About Reyes?

The newest news on the Reyes front is that he is leaving the team to fly back to New York to get the levels of his Thyroid checked. While speaking to the media today, both Reyes and Omar Minaya downplayed the visit, and they are just doing everything to make sure that Reyes is 100 percent healthy.

Call me paranoid, but I am never comfortable when I hear Reyes and Doctor being used in the same sentence.

With all that this guy has been through, I am dying to see him flying around the bases once the regular season kicks off, but more importantly, I am looking forward to seeing a smiling Reyes that is 100 percent healthy.

There is an interesting topic brewing in spring training. A revisit of an old topic that just will not go away. The use of performance enhancing drugs. Every spring, it seems as if this question is raised or brought up. Whenever a player comes into camp, trimmer or more muscular, they are said to be ‘in better shape’. In the back of everyone’s collective mind, however, it is pondered. Last season it was Alex Rodriguez facing a whirlwind of media. Who’s under the microscope now? Two leaders of the New York Mets, David Wright and Jose Reyes.

First, let’s discuss Jose Reyes. Reyes has been involved in a public relations nightmare involving a Canadian doctor, Dr. Anthony Galea.

“A lot of people talked about (Galea),” Reyes said. “I wanted to come back so bad to the field to play, so I say, ‘Why not? Let’s try this guy and see if he can fix me.’ ”

Can David Wright step up his home run total? (PHOTO BY ICON SMI)

Can David Wright step up his home run total? (PHOTO BY ICON SMI)

David Wright has two Gold Glove awards. He has all star appearances. He even has the ‘captain’ status on a major sports franchise in New York. He seemingly has everything. That everything includes a power outage in his teams’ new ballpark. We’ve all been through this, I know, but the numbers don’t lie. Allow me to briefly visit this topic in light of a recent interview David Wright has given. Since he broke into the league in 2004, he has not had a full season of less than 26 home runs or 100 RBI’s until last year. He had a career high in season strikeouts with 140 and career low in season hits with 164.

This could just be one bad year. Let’s hope so, after all every major player has a bad year or two. We don’t have to look too far for an example of this. For all of the slack that Carlos Beltran has had recently, he has been a very productive player, not only for the Mets, but in his career. Beltran has had only three full seasons of less than 20 home runs. Two of them occurred while injured, one of which was last year. The other was directly after signing a major contract and having to adjust to the media jungle that is New York. He bounced back to have a monster year after that.

Grab a slice Mets Fans, their is plenty where this came from

I don’t know about the rest of you, but the longer the Jets made their run into the playoffs the more I was able to stay blissful in a time where my favorite baseball team was shooting itself in the foot day in and day out. Just when you thought maybe things were gonna break the Mets way, they didn’t, and what had happened in 2009 seemed to be carrying over in 2010.

Now after a week or so to sit back and think about what has gone down with the New York Mets in this off season, I can only seem to think this is exactly what we needed to have happen. Now I’m sure your wondering what exactly I’m talking about.

Lets face facts, this team and its expectations have been very high for the last four years or so. In fact I think we have all caught a little bit of what I like to call “Yankee Fan Disease”. What I’m talking about is that we all seem to think that the Mets are just entitled to just about all the praise one can heap on them and that winning a championship is a formality. As we have seen the past four seasons, that is not the case.

The Mets desperately missed Jose Reyes in 2009 and are quite anxious to see his readiness in 2010.  David Wright was the Mets slugger and speedster, he actually was the first Met to steal four bases in a game, an accomplishment for which Reyes must have been proud of for his good friend.

Reyes did not play after May, even though there was talk of him returning in late September, but that did not happen.  With all of the core players missing time in 2009 was very harmful, the absence of Reyes, along with Carlos Delgado for much of the season was an obstacle that could not be overcome by the Mets.

2 Guys We Should be Thankful That Are On Our Team

2 Guys We Should be Thankful That Are On Our Team

Jose Reyes is the Mets sparkplug and his speed and energy are what sets this team in motion. I don’t think that anyone was more surprised than Reyes at how long this hamstring injury took to heal, and there was some speculation that some of the alternative treatments tried last summer was actually detrimental to Reyes.

While Alex Cora and Anderson Hernandez filled in admirably under the circumstances they found themselves in, a healthy return by the Jose Reyes that the Mets and their fans have known and love will be a big boost to this team.

This Decade Has Seen Alot, Including The End of an Era at Shea Stadium

This Decade Has Seen Alot, Including The End of an Era at Shea Stadium

The Decade of the 2000’s for the Mets has been filled with up’s and down’s, joy and sadness and one that took us on a roller coaster that began witha National League Championship, dipped through some lean years from 2002-2004, saw a rebirth and an NL East Title in 2005 and 2006, the collapses of 2007-2008, the ending of one era at Shea and a new one at Citi Field and finally an injury filled 2009 season that leaves us wondering whats next. Over the past 10 years, we have seen some great players come and go, and for some, leave a mark that will be remembered forever, good or bad. So in honor of a Decade in Mets history that was nothing short of a Ride of highs and lows, I give to you my All-Decade Team for the New York Mets.

Some Quick Rules, only stats in the years of this current decade were counted, the player must have spent at least one year with the franchise and the success of the franchise during his time with the team will also be in consideration. Off Fied and On Field impact will also be considered when making the decision as well.

Christmas Time is my favorite part of the Year and In honor of that, i have taken the wonderful poem T’was the Night Before Christmas and added a little blue and Orange to the Party….ENJOY!!

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the Citi
Not a creature was stirring, not even a Reyes.
The stockings were hung by the Apple with care,
In hopes that St Omar soon would be there.

The Mets Fans were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of Jason Bay danced in their heads.
And Manuel in the Dugout, and Fred looking like a sap,
Had just settled their brains for a long winter’s nap.

Today, the Mets saw their highlight off the off season, and unfortunately I need to give Mike Francesa credit for it. WFAN’s obvious Yankee fan conducted a lengthy interview with Mets’ shortstop Jose Reyes, and a lot was revealed that we didn’t know. We learned not only about Jose Reyes the ball player, but we learned about Jose Reyes the man as well.

First of all, I am astonished with the improvement of his English. Reyes used to have a tough time understanding the English language, but now he is very capable of holding a conversation, and he proved that earlier today. He also revealed a lot about himself, and he answered a lot of the accusations that have been brought forth by critics.

Francesa did the right thing by digging right into the issues that Mets’ fans ponder when talking about Reyes. First and foremost, he discussed the injury debacle of last season, and he make it clear that his calf was never injured. The Dodgers’ doctor really screwed him up, and Reyes should have never been on the field during that series against Los Angeles.

Wishing on a star.

Man I wish we had the guns to get Adrian Gonzalez but how can you top Ellsbury/Bucholz? Murphy/Davis/Mejia? They would laugh. Plus they have a sweet hitting first baseman in the minors themselves so Davis does nothing for them. Do any of you guys get the feeling that outside of Bay and maybe a few non-tender signings the Mets are really banking on the health of Beltran/Reyes? It’s like they are counting them as new acquisitions. Am I alone?
