The Mets made their big splash of the off season on Monday as Omar Minaya has officially added Junior Spivey to the mix. Yes, that was a joke, and I know it wasn’t funny. Spivey was once a useful second basemen, but that was many moons ago. In 2002,Spivey batted .301 for Arizona and he crushed 16 homers and knocked in 78 RBI, but after that, his stock plummeted.
After failing to find his game in the next three seasons, Junior found himself out of baseball. Now, he is looking to make some sort of comeback, but I wouldn’t make much of this. This seems like nothing more than a depth move, and Spivey probably has no shot to see the big league club before September. The only person who may be negatively affected by this would be Ramon Martinez, who is hitting a dreadful .167 this spring.
You’re probably thinking, why the heck did he post a story about Junior Spivey? Well, the baseball world is just that slow right now. If Junior makes it to the team somehow during the season, that would probably qualify as a minor miracle. We will wait and see what happens.
