It’s obvious the Mets 2010 plan is to make pretend 2009 didn’t happen and to hope the injured return to form. Plainly obvious in fact. The addition of Jason Bay notwithstanding the Mets did nothing to improve the 2009 roster. In fact, some would say it is slightly worse. But I’m not going to focus on that. Like coaches and managers say all the time, I am only going to worry about my guys that are here. So today, I take a extra long look at Oliver Perez.

Today’s NY TIMES article about Ollie made me start to think. I wonder if Oliver Perez will actually meet expectations this year?

The Mets Could Use Another Right Arm In The Rotation.......

The Mets Could Use Another Right Arm In The Rotation.......

BY MATTHEW FALKENBURY

If you happen to be a fan of the Mets and the Jets, like myself, then doesn’t tonight’s Jets game bring back some interesting feelings that you haven’t felt since September of 2008?

Its the final game in a stadium that has been your home for many years, the playoffs are on the line, your hoping that a man with Mexican heritage steps up when your faith in him is shaken (Oliver Perez and Mark Sanchez) and former players will be coming back for a ceremony to celebrate your history in that building. Man, its a little too similar isn’t it?

The Jets, much like the Mets in September of 2008, need a win and they make the playoffs (of course the Mets were not in a Win and your in the NLDS, but a game 163 at Shea could have been achieved with Milwaukee.) Sure Cincinnati could take a dive and play nobody and let the Jets luck their way in, but as a Jets fan, I would take that route to the playoffs anytime. Making the playoffs is key and you cant win the Super Bowl or World Series unless you make the playoffs, no matter how you get there. Of course I wish the Mets could have gotten the same break in 2007-2008, but they didn’t, and Florida killed us.

Time for the Mets to wake up

Time for the Mets to wake up

By Zachary Schulman

Last year, the Mets bid against themselves for Oliver Perez and consensus shows that signing royally sucked. I am trying to reason with myself that the Mets are being patient with Jason Bay and Bengie Molina in order to try and avoid Ollie 2.0. But let’s be real here, the Mets need to improve this club and change the personnel.

Yes Reyes, Beltran, and Santana will be coming to Spring Training healthy. Wright should improve his offensive numbers after a year in Citi Canyon. But what exactly has this core won? Since the Minaya regime took over in the winter of 2004, they have exactly 1 division title to show for it. I don’t want to hear about being 1 win away twice from being in the playoffs because they didn’t get in. Bascially what I’m trying to say is the Mets core is very good, but have not won anything.

The Redemption of Oliver Perez

Everyone may think that I have really jumped off the deep end with this post but I must say it, I think Oliver Perez is going to have a great season in 2010. It’s alright you can laugh, however, Ollie is currently taking the necessary steps in finally harnessing his immense natural abilities.

Newsday’s Ken Davidoff reported today that “lefthander Oliver Perez was spending the off season training at the Athletes Performance Institute in Tempe, Arizona.” Some fans may say that a psychologist may be even more worthwhile for nutty Ollie, but this definitely is a first step in redeeming himself for an abysmal 2009. Last season Perez was 3-4 with a 6.82 ERA before missing the rest of the season with knee woes.

Can We Move on Now?

Well, I am glad that ordeal is over with. Yankees won, blah blah blah. You can’t get away from it. They’ll have a parade and they will get some keys to the city and then hoepfully them and their rotten fans will go to sleep until April. I mean all I heard from my Yankee friends was how long it’s been since they won a championship. Puh-lease. The only good thing that came out of this is that Pedro lost and the Phillies are not champions. Oh and now the Mets are not mentioned everytime someone says “the last time the Yankees won was against the Mets in 2000″. So thank the good lord for not making me a Yankee.

I want to move on to the off season, Nov 9-11 are the GM meetings in Chicago, great town. Maybe one day Ganci will get some press credentials and then we can really get this ball rolling. The winter meetings are mid December I think (too lazy to check) and that’s always interesting. In my opinion the Mets needs to address the following positions.

After the game you and your friends could always enjoy a nice game of online poker.

Would You Make This Trade?

What do all the impatient Mets fans think of this trade. We’re taking on salary and getting two potentially “great” players for 3 prospects.

Houston trades left fielder Carlos Lee and pitcher Roy Oswalt to the Mets for Oliver Perez, and Luis Castillo, minor league pitchers Brad Holt, and Scott Moviel, and minor league outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis.

Let’s analyze this trade.

…this is a terrible inner monologue device. i can’t stand it…

Adam Rubin’s Surfing the Mets is reporting the possibility of Tim Redding returning to pitch for the team next year. The only worse idea I can think of would be to appoint Jerry Manuel to the cabinet position of Secretary of Education. Why wasn’t this guy cut back in July? If he’s in the rotation next year, its going to be a long season again.

So now we are getting in to the silly season. Every scrub that comes down the line is going to be in the discussion. What in God’s name would the Mets even consider trading for Milton Bradley? I don’t care if they would be able to unload Oliver Perez, this would be a terrible trade. Bradley is a known malcontent. I understand Perez is worthless, but getting rid of him is not worth bringing in this clown. So, I am sure that means he will be a Met by January.

Five Moves To Fix the Mets

When time finally runs out on 2009, there is going to be a plethora of people who believe that injuries are to blame for the failures of 2009. Don’t get me wrong. It definitely contributed, but there are some things that this team needs to do to get back on track. Now I am not talking about the obvious things like getting a healthy Reyes and Beltran back, but I have devised a five-step off season plan for the Mets to get back in the game.

1) Sign Dave Duncan to replace Dan Warthen

This would be an excellent acquisition. Known as the guru of pitching, Duncan is the guy who has been known to literally fix guys in 15 minutes. The Mets have quite a few candidates of patients for Dr. Duncan to examine. First and foremost is Oliver Perez, who has been unable to get out of his own way this season. The next guy would be Mike Pelfrey, who a lot of people think has taken a step back this season. I tend to agree. I don’t see him as a number two right now, but more of a number four. Younger guys would benefit from the acquisition of Duncan too. He could work with guys like Jonathon Niese and Bobby Parnell.

The Mets Doctors See Nothing Wrong With Mr. Met, I Beg To Differ

The Mets Doctors See Nothing Wrong With Mr. Met, I Beg To Differ

If I were Mr. Met, I do believe that I would conduct all business electronically for the forseeable future. It’s not a good time to be wearing blue and orange in public. If you step on a crack, you send a Met to the DL. So maybe there is something to all this talk of a citifield curse. Johan is now done for the year, Francoeur could possibly follow. Anybody else?

This latest addition to the Mets roster Disabled List brings the sum total to 19 different players for the year. Somehow, the Reds have the same number on the year. I would bet the sheer number of lost games is staggering in the Mets favor, for lack of a better word. Delgado alone is around 100 games lost. Think his stick might have been worth 3 or 4 games? Reyes is within shouting distance, playing a whopping 10 more games than Delgado. Let’s not even bring up the rest of the list.

The 36 Million Dollar Mistake

The 36 Million Dollar Mistake

BY ZACHARY SCHULMAN
STACHE WRITER

Fred Wilpon should review his vote of confidence that he gave to Omar Minaya yesterday after sitting through another Oliver Perez debacle. I am done being fooled. Ollie is a below average Major League pitcher, who is easily rattled, and erratic with his control. Any good game he throws should be treated as a rarity, because recently the bad starts tremendously outnumber the good ones.

After bidding against THEMSELVES, the Mets felt like winners when they only had to pony up $36 Million for a pitcher two seasons removed from 15 wins. When the offense has been dismantled by injuries the onus unfairly falls on the starting pitching. This means big ticket items like Oliver Perez need to step up their games. However, Oliver Perez could not get out of the first inning of his start today. He got yanked after falling behind Pedro Martinez 3-0. Jerry would not let him finish the AB.
