Recent news has broke to suggest that Mets’ outfielder Carlos Beltran is soon to be tested for the virus that is commonly being referred to as “Swine Flu.” Beltran, who has been out for the last three games due to what the Mets have been calling a virus, would be the first person in MLB to be affected, and many people are wondering what the next move would be if the star outfielder is indeed affected with the aforementioned virus.

First of all, we have to remember that a case like this has nothing to do with winning or losing. We all know that the Mets would be extremely hurt if Beltran needs to be away from the team, but if he is infected, everyone else might be in danger. That means that Carlos would need to be near the doctors who know how to keep this contained. This could be a life or death situation, and that certainly goes way beyond the game of baseball.

So far, an unidentified Mets’ official has been named as someone who might have the Swine Flu. If this is the case, the likelihood that Beltran is infected would seem to be greater. Another thing that would be worth mentioning is the fact that John Maine has been affected with a similar virus. I am not saying that Maine is infected, but it is definitely something that is worth thinking about. If these two guys are sick, they need to be taken away from the team so that everyone else will not be vulnerable.

The bottom line is this. People need to stop talking about whether this will affect the Mets’ chances of winning. It’s not about that. Baseball is just a game, and this could very well be a situation of life or death.

I’ll say my prayers.
