Top 5: Players the Mets could get at the Deadline

Omar needs to hit a Home Run at the Trade Deadline

Omar needs to hit a Home Run at the Trade Deadline

BY MATTHEW FALKENBURY
ASSISTANT EDITOR

As July 31st gets closer and closer, the questions surrounding what exactly will Omar Minaya do come the Trade Deadline become louder and louder. With Beltran, Reyes, and Delgado still out for at least a few more weeks, the fans, including yours truly are wondering just what is the plan for this team.

If they are going to sell, what exactly can they get back in return? That answer is actually quite simple, don’t worry about it cause Freddy and Friends wont sell with a new ballpark in its Rookie Season.

Of coursethey could always stand pat and just wait out the injuries, which isn’t too bad an idea. Then again, if your like me, I have a hard time thinking that Beltran, Reyes and Delgado will come back and start hitting the cover off the ball. I have this odd reasoning that states that players coming back from injury need to readjust to Major League pitching, odd right?.

Then their is door number three, which is that Omar goes out and makes either a big move or a few small moves to try to keep the team afloat until the three musketeers or is it muscle-tears come back from their stints on the DL. With that I wanted to present to you the Top 5 players the Mets and Omar should look into acquiring at or before the Deadline to help keep our season alive.

Changing of the Guard: Dunn Could Be The True Solution

Not even Citi Field can contain Adam Dunn's homers, but is he worth the risk?

Not even Citi Field can contain Adam Dunn's homers, but is he worth the risk?

Over the past several weeks it has become obvious that the New York Metropolitans offense has about as much pep as a four cylinder sedan. An infusion of power will be needed if we wish to watch our team play while the leaves turn color. My proposition for a jumpstart to a mediocre offense is none other than Adam Dunn.

Dunn’s name has been mentioned over the airwaves this spring and at first I was pessimistic that a player that strikes out as much as him could help. However, after watching him hit a meteor out of cavernous Citi Field my opinion on Dunn has changed. His .263 batting average is tolerable considering the Mets have several members of the lineup hitting over .300. The statistic that really opens eyes is his 18 home runs, 48 RBI’s, and .399 on base percentage.

As it stands today, no Mets batter has more than 8 homers and Dunn’s .530 slugging percentage overshadows every player on the active roster. Yes Adam Dunn has 72 strikeouts, but fan favorite David Wright is right behind him with 69. Overall, the Mets are a team that gets on base and avoids the strikeout. The real problem has been driving in the runners in scoring position and doing so with power.

Many fans have clamored for a trade involving Matt Holiday. Holiday is a fine ballplayer, but do the Mets want to take a chance on a guy who played a mile above sea level where baseballs take off and lands light years away. Dunn has hit 40 plus homers five times and driven in 100 RBIs four times in the past five seasons. In addition to his statistics, Dunn will alleviate the pressure that Wright and Carlos Beltran consistently put on themselves to carry this light hitting batting order.

As I discussed in a previous post, it is uncertain if Carlos Delgado will be able to regain his form after he comes back from hip surgery. Instead of throwing a coin into a wishing well and begging for a resurgent Delgado, Omar Minaya can obtain a sure thing.

The power outage in Flushing has gone on for almost three months without a technician(Omar Minaya) to turn it back on. A trade for a true thumper will fortify the heart of the order and help propel the Mets into the cold days of October.

Just Say No To Adam Dunn

The Mets are struggling right now, and that is in large part because of the injuries that have forced Carlos Delgado, Jose Reyes and others out of the lineup for extended periods of time. Currently, they stand at number 28 in the league in home runs, and there has been a lot of talk about them seeking outside help from another organization. There have been several names that have been mentioned that I am a fan of, such as Carlos Lee and Nick Johnson.

But there is one name that I don’t want to see affiliated with the Mets, and that is Adam Dunn.

Over the past few seasons, Dunn has been one of the best in baseball in hitting the long ball. He did it when he was with the Reds, and despite what the critics thought he would do, he still is still hitting the long balls with regularity. In fact, he stands in the top five in the National League, and it almost seems like he has hit more homers than the entire Mets team. Well…that may be stretching it a bit.

While the power would be a nice and welcomed addition, there are three parts of Dunn’s game that concern me. First is defense. Watching him in the outfield this weekend has been atrocious. He makes Sheffield and Murphy look like Endy Chavez in the outfield. I am sure he could probably hold down the fort at first, but then we would have to deal with the range that would be reminiscent of Mo Vaughn from a few years back.

Another thing you have to watch out with for Dunn is his speed. He isn’t exactly fleet of foot, and with the Mets’ current troubles on the base paths, he wouldn’t exactly be the man to help solve that problem. If he was on first base, he couldn’t score on a double. That hurts when you are a team like the Mets that has enough trouble scoring as it is.

The third, and most glaring, problem with Adam Dunn is the strikeout rate. He has always been known to be an all or nothing type of guy who walks a ton, but he also strikes out as much as half of some teams. David Wright seems to be doing enough of that for the Mets this season, and I think the Mets would be better off going for a high on base percentage guy like Nick Johnson.

The problem is that the Mets have a depleted minor league system.

If Omar Minaya makes any big changes, it would certainly shock the heck out of me.

Ollie To Return to Queens?

Foxsports.com’s Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Mets may be closing in on a deal with lefty starter Oliver Perez. The market for Ollie has been quiet, and it looks like the Mets are going to be the winners of this waiiting game. Details of the potential agreement have not been disclosed, but it looks like a three year deal, with a fourth year vesting option included.

Maybe this is a sign that the Boras xcoming to New York rumors were true. Now the question on everyone’s minds is this. Did they talk about Manny? It wouldn’t seem likely, because someone would have picked something up about it by now. If this Rosenthal report does happen to come to fruition, then the Mets are all set with starting pitching, and then it will be time to focus on offense.

Noone knows what the Mets are willing to do. Are they going to stand pat? Are they going to go all out and make a play for Manny Ramirez? Or will they sign a guy like Bobby Abreu or Adam Dunn? I don’t know, but the rumor mill should be hot for weeks to come.

The Wilpons should realize that it is time to open their wallets.
