The Mets Should Look at Mark DeRosa

DeRosa's versatility would serve the Mets well

According to SI’s Jon Heyman, a bunch of teams have been asking about super utilityman Mark DeRosa, who is a free agent after being traded from Cleveland to St. Louis during the season. It’s disappointing to me that Heyman does not list the Mets as one of those teams.
The best part about Mark DeRosa is that you can put him almost anywhere, which makes him perfect for a team with multiple holes like the Mets. For example, right now a lot of fans are hoping that the Mets can trade Luis Castillo so they can sign a different second baseman like Orlando Hudson. However, with DeRosa, you could sign him first without waiting to find someone desperate enough to take on Castillo. If Castillo is traded, then great, $6 million is off the books and you already have a guy who can play second base. Still want to sign Hudson? That’s fine. DeRosa can play left field or platoon with Daniel Murphy at first.

Mets Exploring Deal For DeRosa

Mark DeRosa has always been more valuable than the numbers would indicate.

It looks like the Mets are finally taking their problems seriously.
According to an AOL Fanhouse Report, the Mets have contacted the Indians about Mark DeRosa, who is capable of playing pretty much any position on the field. While the acquisition of DeRosa would certainly help the Mets’ depth problems, I am not sure if he would be worth the return. The NY Post Speculates that it may cost JJ Putz, which would create a bigger hole in the bullpen.
I know that Putz has failed to dazzle the fan base thus far, but we need to remember that it is still May, and he has been battling quite a few injuries. Putz on top of his game is one of the best set-up men in the game.
Derosa has the ability to hit to all fields with power, and he plays first base, second base, shortstop and third base. He also has played outfield as well. He has the versatility of Joe McEwing, but he is a much better hitter.
Overall, DeRosa is hitting .255 with six homers and 26 RBI. What is more impressive is he would add another good right handed bat against lefties, off which he is hitting .316 this year.
The thought of acquiring DeRosa is definitely enticing, but I worry at the cost. He is on a contract year, and he is owned over $4 million for the rest of 2009. I just hope the Mets do not have to overpay to fill their hole.
Boy I love trade rumors.
